Selecting the right tree varieties

Fine Trees - Precious Stems

Forestry knowledge and woodland skills are a combination of good silvicultural practise, careful choice of species and 'state of the art' genetic improvement. Genetics are of very great interest and these principles guide us.

In most cases we collect our own seed from the best trees of local or native origins. However, this only applies to those trees and shrubs when conservation is the main objective. 'Native' is the required hallmark of these species. They preserve the naturalness of the landscape and are a priority in woodland edges of rides and boundaries. There is little point in seeking costly genetic improvement here.

Major broadleaves can display considerable genetic variations, both in vigour, in form and in branching characteristics. Where possible, we select whatever has the greatest genetic potential, particularly in Oak, Wild Cherry, Ash, Walnut and Poplar where Belgian clones have remarkable vigour.

Most major conifers have clearly defined genetic options which are much less available in our native broadleaves. Where this is the case, we do not collect, but buy the best selected conifer seed on a quality basis. In our lowland climate, we favour the greater vigour displayed by the southern Oregon and northern Californian provenances, viz Elmia in Douglas fir and Oregon in Sitka spruce.
