Colorado White Fir tree
A mountain-side species from the hot dry regions of Southern California, Utah, Colorado and NW Mexico. In Britain, since its introduction in the nineteenth century, it has only been used as an amenity tree. Young plants in particular exhibit very distinctive glaucous grey foliage. A succession of planting, say at 10 year intervals, maintains this striking foliage effect, and the neat conical juvenile outline close to eye level. A high yielding timber subspecies (subsp. lowiana), with which true Abies concolor has always been confused, is from further north and lacks such strikingly coloured foliage.
