Cut-leaved Birch tree
This cultivar of common silver birch has all the features of the silver birch but in addition it has finely cut foliage. Furthermore most specimens are very symmetrical and elegant, with fine graceful branches and drooping shoots. This is a good landscape plant having a bright silver and brown stem and light airy foliage. Almost no shade is cast and it will not block a vista or long view. It will grow perfectly well in full sun, and is totally hardy in Britain. Originally this was a wild 'sport' found in Sweden in 1767. Another commonly used name for it is 'Swedish birch'. Similar wild forms are still to be found in Scandinavian birch forests today. Many trees in cultivation are wrongly named 'Dalecarlica' they should in fact be called 'Laciniata' which is a less predictable tree which usually has a more weeping tendency.
