Indian Cedar tree
Deodar is a substantial and elegant tree usually with a single stem which retains a broad conical shape for many years. Although the branches tend to flatten out with age it never looks as flat as Lebanon cedar. The evergreen needles are longer than on all the other cedars (4cm) borne singly on new growth and in tufts on older spur shoots. They are green to grey green and soft to the touch. The flowers (catkins) occur in autumn followed by 15cm barrel-shaped cones which mature a year later. The flexible foliage sheds snow very well so branches break less frequently than they do on other cedars. The bark is dark grey, fissured vertically as it thickens with age. In the landscape this tree can be planted as an eye-catcher but in this role it is a little dull. If a grove of about 10 trees is spaced at about 4 metres apart, a dramatic conifer forest effect can be achieved. As the trees mature the needle covered ground below them remains permanently clear of vegetation. Deodar comes from the western Himalayas where it grows up to 3048 metres elevation on mountain sides. It was introduced to Britain by the Hon. L. Melville of Fife in 1831.
