Japanese Cedar tree (Cryptomeria Japonica)

£21.60

Japanese Cedar-In Japan this tree has been cultivated for so long that its natural origin is no longer well defined. The timber, called sugi, is in constant demand. It is stable and very light in weight. It is used for joinery, boat building, furniture and construction work. Sadly it is not usually available in Britain, even though the tree grows perfectly well here especially in western districts. Incredibly it took 150 years from its discovery in Japan to its introduction to Britain (from China) in 1842. In winter the the Japanese Cedar turns  a brownish/coppery look which to some looks as if it is dying.  The stringy bark is very hard though.

Size: in 10yrs-8metres after 20 years 12metres - event hgt 30metres
Environment: Prefers a rich, deep, moist soil that is light and contains significant organic matter. Full sun is best. Protection from wind is essential.
