Full Description
The Silver Birch Tree (Betula Pendula) is one of Britain’s most iconic and recognisable native trees, celebrated for its striking silvery-white bark and graceful, drooping branches. Perfect for both small gardens and expansive landscapes, this decorative tree brings elegance and charm to any setting. Its distinctive peeling bark, which resembles delicate tissue paper, retains a silvery-white hue while the base darkens to a rugged black with age, adding year-round visual interest.
Growing to heights of 15–20 meters with a similar spread, the Silver Birch develops a light, airy canopy that allows sunlight to filter through, supporting over 300 species of insects, birds, mammals, and fungi. Its triangular, serrated leaves turn golden yellow and brown in autumn, while male and female catkins appear on the same tree, dispersing seeds on the wind.
Beyond its ornamental appeal, the Silver Birch has practical uses: its timber is valued for joinery and firewood, and it has a long history in traditional medicine. Whether planted in gardens, parklands, or forests, the Silver Birch makes a striking and ecologically beneficial addition to any landscape.
Aftercare
Silver Birch tolerates most soil conditions and enjoys good sunlight or partial shade. It is fast growing and needs low maintenance but can be pruned to remove any dead or diseased branches. Pruning should be done during late Autumn or early Spring. If you cannot plant bare root straight away then they should be fine for up to a week if kept in a cold shed or garage out of any frosts. If you still cannot plant out your bare root trees after a week then you can either heal them into the ground by making a small hole and burying the roots under the soil until you are able to plant out. Water well after planting and it is essential to water during spring and summer once or twice a week for the first season.
