Silver Maple tree (Acer Saccharinum )Looks great planted in a row along street or driveway, or in a place easily viewed from a window so you can enjoy its natural beauty year round. A large ornamental tree in Britain with silver backed leaves which are five lobed and deeply indented giving a delicate lacy look to the whole tree. Open grown specimens rapidly reach 20 metres or more in height, with an up-swept head of branches. The young bark is pinkish-brown turning to pale grey with age. Sometimes, in Britain, the stem is hidden by numerous epicormic shoots. Tiny yellow flowers appear before the leaves emerge, but they tend to be high up and not easy to see properly. Seed is seldom produced in Britain. In the tree collection this is a plant for the background, to be viewed from some way off. Branches often break in strong winds so it is not suitable for public areas or urban use. The roots also tend to block drains. The sap contains very little sugar consequently squirrel damage is seldom a problem. Silver maple is an important timber tree in its native eastern North America. It was introduced to Europe in 1725 by Sir Charles Wager.
