Bare root stock available Oct-April or PRE ORDER NOW and reserve WINGNUT TREE - This spectacular striking tree, it is difficult not to be impressed by them, even if they are seen in winter, bare of foliage. Makes a lovely shade tree, a cool place to walk into, or eat, on a hot summer day. This large deciduous tree is a member of the same family as the walnut. The most distinctive feature of this tree is the nuts hang down in clusters. It has green leaves that can grow to over 60cm (2ft) long and that turn butter-yellow in autumn. In the spring, it produces a unique feature, eye catching chains of yellow catkins that can also grow 60cm (2ft) long. Followed by interesting, pendant winged fruit in autumn. Nutlets form with light yellow wings 2cm.The leaves and bark are aromatic, the bark is deeply furrowed grey-brown. When they are mature they have thick trunks from which strong branches spring, producing a round crown. In its native Iran, it is often found growing by rivers, so its favoured position is in moist, almost boggy, soil where it can also get plenty of light. although it is completely hardy, late frosts sometimes burn the young foliage, especially in frost pockets or low ground. Trees 30 metres tall are known, they usually divide from the base though and grow wider than tall. This species comes from the Caucasus Mountains and northern Iran and was introduced to Britain in 1782. If space permits this makes a lovely shade tree. A cool place to walk into, or eat, on a hot summer day.
