Holm Oak (Quercus Ilex)

Holm Oak (Quercus Ilex)- Good as shelterbelt tree or hedging. Can withstand sea winds, late spring produces male catkins, acorns are pointed and does not lose its leaves. There are few very large evergreen broadleaved trees that will grow in Britain. Holm Oak (Quercus Ilex) is one of them, it makes a bold statement in the landscape either as a single specimen or better still as a clump. The rough dark grey bark is broken into small squarish blocks. Leaves are leathery and dark glossy grey-green. Young acorns are green and turn red/brown when mature. The whole tree contrast beautifully with sweeping sunlit mown or grazed grassland. Cell grown means a little like (plug plants)
