Common Walnut trees (Juglans Regia)
Bare root stock available Oct-April or PRE ORDER NOW and reserve
Common Walnut trees (Juglans Regia)- The bark is smooth, olive brown when young and silvery-grey on older branches. The male flowers are in drooping catkins and the female flowers ripen in the autumn into a fruit with husk.
Walnut seeds-Walnuts are rounded, single-seeded fruits of the walnut tree. The walnut fruit is enclosed in a green leathery husk, which is inedible. The walnut seed is edible and are a high density source of nutrients, particularly proteins and essential fatty acids.
Juglans Regia is universally known as a richly figured wood veneer in antique furniture. Especially before about 1750 when mahogany became available. The timber is in as much demand now as it has ever been. Even the roots of good trees are utilised. Plants prefer light fertile soil and need shelter and plenty of space. The hardy Common Walnut tree makes a good specimen tree for the larger garden.
The combination of healthy unsaturated fats, high levels of antioxidants, and rich vitamin content has increased interest in growing nuts in the garden or home orchard. Somewhat surprisingly the humble Walnut is turning out to be perhaps the healthiest of all nuts, thanks to its super-abundance of antioxidants.
Pruning Walnut - Regular pruning of walnuts trees is not necessary but if you wish to prune back annoying or overhanging branches this should be done in mid summer/early autumn to avoid bleeding (sap). Heavy pruning is not recommended.
