Full Description
The Field Maple (Acer Campestre) is the only maple species native to the UK, making it a superb choice for both native hedging and as an elegant garden tree. This versatile, medium-sized deciduous tree grows to an impressive height of 15 to 20 meters, with a sturdy trunk that can reach up to a meter in diameter. Its compact, bushy crown provides a lush, full appearance that’s ideal for adding natural structure and privacy to landscapes. Field Maple is commonly found across England and Europe, where it’s prized for its adaptability, resilience, and benefits to wildlife.
Throughout the summer, the Field Maple’s leaves display a vibrant bright green colour, often tinged with touches of red that add extra visual interest to gardens and hedges. As autumn arrives, this foliage undergoes a stunning transformation, turning to warm shades of golden yellow that brighten any landscape. This seasonal shift offers a beautiful spectacle, especially when accompanied by the tree’s distinctive winged fruits, known as samaras, which hang in clusters from its branches. These small, paired seeds create a charming display and are also a valuable food source for birds and other wildlife, supporting local biodiversity.
The Field Maple is not only beautiful but also highly functional, making it a popular choice for hedging. Its dense foliage and robust branching pattern provide excellent screening and serve as a natural windbreak, offering shelter to gardens and wildlife alike. As a hedging plant, it’s capable of forming a dense, attractive boundary that maintains privacy while enhancing the ecological health of an area. Hardy and low maintenance, the Field Maple is adaptable to various soil types and climates, making it a perfect addition for anyone seeking both aesthetic appeal and environmental benefit in their garden or landscape.
