Fig Tree (Ficus carica) ‘Brown Turkey’

Fig Tree (Ficus carica) 'Brown Turkey' - This striking fruit, with its fresh green or deep purple skin and vibrant deep pink flesh, is a wonderful addition to the autumnal table. A large deciduous shrub with bold, deeply lobed leaves and tiny flowers borne within a hollow receptacle which enlarges to form the edible fruit to 10cm in length, at first green and quite hard, but purplish and soft when ripe. Usually the Fig Tree (Ficus carica) 'Brown Turkey' has one crop of fruit per year, but sometimes two in a hot summer or under protection. Fig trees are quite hardy and will grow well in most UK gardens. They fruit best when grown in a warm situation-trained as fans on walls or in the open garden. Delicious fruits for eating, baking or even jam making. Prune in spring when all chance of frost has past. Remove any frost-damaged or weak branches, and thin out shoots to let light in. Some pruning may be required in summer to encourage bushier growth. If so, trim all new shoots back to five or six leaves. For more fruit trees click here
