Indian Horse Chestnut AESCULUS INDICA

Indian Horse Chestnut Aesculus Indica is a deciduous tall tree, more suitable to parkland, large estates or very large gardens which has a rounded habitiat.  It bears panicles of soft pink flushed flowers in summer with bronze foliage, when young it will turn glossy and dark green before changing to orange and yellow in autumn.  The trees deeply cut leaves make it the prettiest of the Chestnut family. A relative of the common horse chestnut, the Indian Horse Chestnut Aesulus indica from the Himalaya is a spectacular early summer flowering tree.  The fruits are smooth and spineless, and contain a shiny seed ('conker') which is wrinkled.  These are darker and smaller than the common horse chestnut, making it less useful for the 'conker' player. The flowers appear in July and are carried in upright spikes, up to 30 cm high or more. Individual flowers have four petals, the upper pair being mainly white, with a yellow blotch at the base turning red, while the lower two petals are tinged with pink. FACTS: Quite a rare tree with an eventual height is approx 17 meters.  It tolerates chalky soils well, the trunk is smooth and grey green with green/brown coloured twigs and is very good for bees.
