Windbreaks and Shelterbelts
‘Optimal Shelterbelts’ (OSB)® are the proven design of the 5 metre wide, 4-row shelterbelt and windbreak (Oxford University) which gives you the maximum potential microclimate in the lee of the prevailing wind, increasing the ambient humidity, the soil temperature and the ‘crop degree days’ at the same time reducing wind abrasion, as in a polytunnel. This is likely to extend to 20 x the height of the tallest trees – i.e. when the trees are 10 metres high the microclimate bubble will extend as far as 200 metres from the OSB® designed trees and shrubs.

‘Supahedge’® is the 2 metre wide, 2-row shelterbelt which uses less land but which complies exactly with the government SFI/CSS specification of Creating New Hedgerows (BN11)

Buying Options
OSBs and Supahedge® are sold ‘per metre’ run and comprise all the items required in either a 5m width of OSB, or 2m width of Supahedge per metre run of length – i.e. all the different tree species, their guards, stakes, biodegradable matting and securing pins.
You will need to measure the length of your proposed hedge and multiply the cost by the number of metres and we will do the rest. For best effect please remember that eddying and turbulence is possible in lengths of less than 100 metres.

Whereas your own price and the numbers of items required will be £ per metre (delivered including VAT) multiplied by your measured length = £ total price of all items for your windbreak / shelterbelt.
Example – £39.30 per metre (OSB) x 137m (your measured length) = £5,384.10 (this includes VAT and delivery)
Optimal Shelterbelts (OSB)®
100 metres will require the following items:
- 288 trees cell grown 30/50cms or 45/60cms transplants made up as 17 each of tall trees – Scots Pine, Black Poplar, Aspen, Common Alder, Grey Alder, Hornbeam; 14 each medium size trees of Field Maple, Silver Birch, Rowan, Bird Cherry, Crab Apple, Goat Willow and 14 each of Shrubs – Hazel, Hawthorn, Guelder Rose, Common Buckthorn, Alder Buckthorn, and Spindleberry
- 288 guards and stakes, made up as 187 x 1.2m guards and 1.5m hardwood stakes; 84 x Easywrap plastic guards (0.9m) and 1.2m canes; 17 x 1.2m ventilated guards and 1.5m hardwood stakes.
- 4 rolls x 100m x 1m wide = 400sqm of Ecotex Biodegradable matting
- 1 box of plastic pegs (100) and 400 bamboo pins

‘Supahedge’®
100 metres will include the following items:
- 600 trees in total 45/60cms transplants as 17 each of Scots Pine, Black Poplar, Aspen, Common Alder, Grey Alder, Hornbeam and 33 each of Field Maple, Silver Birch, Rowan, Bird Cherry, Crab Apple, Goat Willow, and 50 each of Hazel, Hawthorn, Guelder Rose, Common Buckthorn, Alder Buckthorn, Spindleberry
- 600 guards and stakes, made up as 283 1.2m guards and 1.5m hardwood stakes; 300 Easywraps and 0.9m canes; 17 each of 1.2m ventilated guards and 1.5m hardwood stakes (for the Scots Pine).
- 2 x 100 rolls x 1m wide = 200 sq m of Ecotex Biodegradable matting
- 1 box of 500 bamboo pins

Delivery
All our stock is “lifted” to order, which means that they are “lifted” and packed the same day and sent off so delivery is made the following day hence you receive them as fresh as possible. They are well packed and they are able to stay in the bags they arrive in for up to 7/10 days out of any frosts but it is advisable to plant bareroot trees as soon as possible. We are able to give you a suitable delivery date after the order has been placed when we email your order of acknowledgement to you. Unlike other nurseries who usually say within 3-5 days we can give you a definite day.
As soon as we receive your order we can usually send these out within the week. We use a courier and a signature will be required UNLESS you inform us (in the comments box) of where you would like your goods left safely should you not be at home. It is possible to select a day (apart from week-ends and Fridays) when ordering.
Delivery Charges
We will send you a delivery date via email when we receive your order.
Very SMALL ORDERS between quantities of 1-15 in size 40/60 can usually be sent out via ROYAL MAIL (UK mainland only) for as little as £8.00. Your basket will still show £15.00 plus vat for delivery charge BUT if you put in the COMMENTS BOX that you wish delivery by ROYAL MAIL we can pick this up and change the payment when the order is submitted . All other order are priced as:
- Orders up to £75 – delivery £15 plus vat
- £76 – £200 – delivery £22 plus vat
- £201 – £300 – delivery £30 plus vat
- £301 – £500 – delivery £40 plus vat
- £501 – £1000 – delivery £45 plus vat
- £1001 plus – delivery £50 plus vat
Scotland Grampians/Highlands do carry an extra delivery charge according to our couriers – we can advise on this extra charge.
Guernsey, Jersey, Isle of Man, Isle of Wight, Northern and Southern Ireland. It is possible for us to arrange delivery to these areas but we would have to arrange the cost with our couriers so please contact our office 01452 832100.
