Aftercare
Pruning a weeping willow (or other willow variety) is simple – prune when there is no active growth usually between November to early March to prevent sap bleeding from the trees. Remove branches that block airflow to the trunk and any damaged branches. When planting always remember to water really well in its first year.
Watering: This is the most crucial aspect. Keep the soil consistently moist to wet. Young trees must be watered deeply and regularly, particularly during the first two summers and any dry spells. Once established, they are more resilient, but will still thrive with adequate moisture.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring (November to March) to avoid heavy sap bleeding. Remove damaged, diseased, or crossing branches to improve air circulation. Trim back branches that touch the ground to maintain a tidy shape.
Size Control: The tree grows rapidly (up to 12m+ over 20 years), so it can be pollarded or pruned hard to keep it within smaller spaces if necessary.
Mulching: Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the tree in spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds, but avoid placing it directly against the trunk.
Feeding: Generally, no fertiliser is needed, as this species prefers to establish strong roots in search of nutrients and moisture.
Staking: For the first 1-2 years, use a tree stake and tie to prevent the tree from blowing over until its extensive root system is established.
Maintenance: Clear away debris and fallen leaves from under the tree to minimize disease, as willows can be prone to fungal issues like willow scab and canker.
Important Considerations
Location: Due to their aggressive, water-seeking root systems, do not plant within 30 feet of buildings, drains, or septic lines.
Hardiness: Fully hardy throughout the UK.
