Holm Oak (Quercus Ilex)

Holm Oak trees-Quercus Ilex is a good shelter belt tree, can withstand sea winds, late spring produces male catkins, acorns are pointed and does not loose its leaves but would not tolerate very cold climates. There are few very large real evergreen broad leaved trees that will grow in Britain. Holm oak is one, it makes a bold statement in the landscape either as a single specimen or better still as a clump. Although widespread in lowland districts this tree thrives best in the south and west, or close to the sea elsewhere. The rough dark grey bark is broken into small squarish blocks. It's eaves are leathery and dark grey-green. Young acorns are green but will turn red/brown when more mature. The whole tree contrasts beautifully with sweeping sunlit mown or grazed grassland. PRUNING this is best pruned during the growing period so either spring or early summer. Cell Grown means a little like giant plug plants.
