Full Description
The Sugar Maple (Acer Saccharum) is a magnificent tree, often resembling the Norway maple but with a more upright form. Native to North America, it spans a vast range from subtropical Guatemala and Mexico all the way to Canada. Known commercially for its sap, which is used to produce maple syrup, sugar, and durable hardwood lumber for furniture and flooring, the Sugar Maple is both a functional and decorative tree.
When given plenty of sunshine during the summer, the Sugar Maple displays stunning autumn colours, with shades of red, purple, and yellow, making it a beautiful addition to any garden. However, in the UK, the tree’s autumn foliage may vary depending on the summer weather.
Ideal for larger gardens or park settings, the Sugar Maple thrives in a variety of soils, though it prefers well-drained, non-wet conditions. It is important to plant it at least 7 meters from buildings due to its shallow, branching roots. Avoid planting in areas with stagnant water or near salt, as it is sensitive to road salts and harsh conditions. Perfect for those seeking a tree with seasonal beauty, natural shade, and the potential for maple syrup production, the Sugar Maple is an excellent choice for your landscape.
Aftercare
The Sugar Maple does not require pruning but if necessary pruning should only be done when they are dormant between November and January as they do tend to bleed sap from pruning at other times. Remember to water well in the first 12 months when first planted out. Best colours if planted out in full sunny position.
